EACH - PRESEC 2009 Annual Report Summary

Educational Accessibility for Children in Hardship (EACH)

2009 EACH-Presec Annual Report – Summary

EACH-Presec Scholar Award Program is the result of a partnership between EACH (Educational Accessibility for Children in Hardship) Foundation and alumni of Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School. The Each-Foundation makes scholarships available to brilliant but underprivileged primary, junior and senior secondary school students in Ghana.

EACH-Presec specifically focuses on the exceptional students of Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School, Legon-Accra, Ghana. Scholarship recipients receive an award that helps fund their educational expenses, are assigned mentors and are awarded a book prize.

Scholarship Recipients

This year’s scholarship process was particularly competitive. We recorded a record number of applicants, after extensive efforts by the EACH-Presec Ghana team to publicize the program’s offering and benefits.

Congratulations to the 2009 scholarship recipients:

Elorm Azugbe

Musah Azumah

Elorm and Musah: well done, you have earned this. Thanks also to members of the scholarship selection team; this year’s process was particularly effective.

Finances

2009 was a very successful financial year for EACH-Presec. After revamping the fundraising program in 2008 to a more focused fundraising effort, we received more than GHS 7,500 in total contributions for 2009. In addition, outstanding pledges at the end of 2009 amounted to over GHS 7,000.

We are happy to say the majority of the contributions came for the leadership of EACH-Presec. This is important because by funding EACH’s work, these leaders have affirmed their commitment to EACH-Presec’s work and to the scholars’ educational needs. Thank you again to our generous donors.

Mentorship and work experience

For the second year, in consultation with Paa Kwesi Imbeah, OdadeƸ ’98, of Suuch Solutions (a Ghana based technology consulting firm), EACH-Presec continued the paid internship program for our scholars.

This provided an excellent opportunity for our scholars to gain experience in a professional environment. Elorm Azugbe and Musah Azumah participated in the program and had a great learning experience.

Next Steps

Among the top priorities for EACH-Presec’s leadership team are how to make sure scholars are well supported throughout their time at Presec and how to ensure the program is financially sustainable. To these ends, we will continue to pursue the establishment of an endowment for all scholarships. In particular, our fundraising will focus on endowment-related pledges from key program leaders. In addition, we will target long term investment instruments. Our hope is to secure more funds from committed OdadeƸ to further expand our scholarship program and other activities.

Presec Beats Pope John In Science And Maths Quiz

The 10th week of the Champion’s Trophy of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has taken place on Ghana Television (GTV), with Presec beating Pope John.

[Presec Beats Pope John In Science And Maths Quiz]

Dr. Elsie Effah Kaufmaann was the Quiz Mistress at the beginning of the 1/8 final round where Presec continued to keep its hole of winning this year’s trophy alive.

Watch out this weekend as Keta Senior High School and Anglican Senior High School, Kumasi, meet for the 11th week in yet another keen competition.

Last week, Wesley Girls got another chance to stay in the competition by being the highest scoring loser. Their comeback was well-deserved as they sent competition veterans, Prempeh College home at the preliminary stage.

In the previous weeks, PRESEC knocked our St Francis Xavier, while Pope John edged our Mfantsiman Girls and Anglican Senior High School beat Mafantsipim School with Keta Senior High Scholl thrashing Achimota School.

Accra Academy sent Bolgatanga Senior High School packing and St. Augustine’s College got St. Louis Senior High School out of the contest. Tamale Senior High School beat Wesley Girls’ High School and Opoku Ware ensured that it was the end of the road for Notre Dame Seminary.

Odadee partners with prestigious USA university

We've just got confirmation that an Odadee has partnered with the US Department of Energy (DoE) and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) to produce software that will allow organizers of student competitions to keep better track of scores and time. This is very appropriate, given PRESEC's recent math and science competition win at the national level.

Kwame Andah, an Odadee and software entrepreneur writes:

"I would like to know the science head at PRESEC to give them a free copy of the software, as a thank you for the excellent education I received while attending school there.

And as well to help the students keep excelling at the science competitions.

Cheers,
Kwame Andah"

The TIME is NOW

Fellow Odadee
The TIME is NOW.
We need to provide the hotel caterers with the no of us attending by MID APRIL (next FRIDAY) so we must show our commitment with MONEY.
Please PURCHASE your Ticket via www.odadee75.org website or any of the ODADEE listed on the flyers attached here.

We have raffle tickets for sale now at £1 each (10 per pack) and prizes include a flat screen TV, weekend stay at a luxurious LONDON hotel and various other ENTICING PRIZES. You could purchase them with your event tickets.
There would also be sale of PRESEC Memorabilia like Tee shirts, baseball caps, badges(that only prefects wore in my day) and a CD of the school anthem etc so you would definitely have your pick (REASONABLY- PRICED , OF COURSE).

Could YEAR REPRESENTATIVES please chase their classmates to Purchase tickets (LAST DAYS ARE DANGEROUS) and send me a list of those attending with any seating preferences since we have planned for people to sit with their guests/classmates/oodido mates/rablo mates/housemates/dynasty mates(Madina goers)/ABUGISS and MARYSS frequenters.

Find some time to visit the event website where our webmaster Ralph Odartey (1975) has done a great job. Kudos to all of you working QUIETLY and EFFECTIVELY behind the scenes to ENSURE A FUN-FILLED and PURPOSEFUL EVENT.

PS. the ticket price of £60 is based on having to pay £41 for the 3 COURSE MEAL/VENUE and other costs like AUDIO-VISUALS,ADVERTISING etc and once we formally launch a group and register as a charity (thus attracting big sponsorship), subsidies could lower the price in future.

Have a nice weekend.

Presecan, Frank Adu Poku, is 2009 best WASSCE candidate

A total of 157,988 candidates, including 70,121 girls wrote the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The Head of the National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced this at this year’s WASSCE National Excellence Awards ceremony to honour four candidates who excelled in the 2009 exams. A former student of the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, Legon, Frank Adu Poku, was adjudged the overall best candidate. James Nana Nti, also formerly of the Presby Boys SHS, Legon was adjudged the fourth best and best Business candidate.

Maame Afua Otua Ofori, formerly of the Holy Child Senior High School at Cape Coast, places second while Fathia Karima of Wesley Girls High School came third. The award was instituted by the WAEC Endowment Fund with an objective to reward school candidates who excel in WAEC’s national and international examinations, and to encourage hard work and honesty among the candidates.

According to WAEC, the results of 22,014 candidates who wrote the exams were withheld last October for investigations to be conducted on cases of malpractices and the registration of unqualified students. Mrs. Patience Ayesu, head of National Office of WAEC said the malpractices which led to the withholding of the results were facilitated by some teachers and invigilators in some schools. She said the Council had submitted the names of the teachers and schools to the Ghana Education Service for sanctions to be applied against them.

The entire results of 1,080 candidates who wrote the 2009 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been cancelled. Additionally, the subject results of 2,739 have also been cancelled. The affected candidates were involved in various examination malpractices.

After winning the National Science and Maths quiz for the 5th time in 2009, Presecans continue to excel in the secondary school final exams. Presec won it in 1995, 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009.
